Daniel Beatty,
DVM
From the West Coast to the
East Coast, up into
Canada and in his own backyard, international presenter Dr. Daniel
Beatty (Dr. Dan) has been on a quest for the past 10 years to find the
best of the best horse & pet health information.
Dr. Dan is a 1996 graduate of the University of Illinois, College of
Veterinary Medicine. He began his career as a large animal general
practitioner in Princeton, Illinois. While there, he completed advanced
course work in animal chiropractics and became certified by the
American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (AVCA).
Also, as a member of the
American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association (AHVMA)
, Dr. Dan is devoted to the full availability of medical options for
all animals, especially your horse, dog or cat.
OK enough with this third person garbage let me
tell you the rest...
In 1999, the International Alliance for Animal
Therapy and Healing (IAATH) had their
founding meeting in Vancouver, WA. I was there, meeting the industries
greatest holistically minded practitioners such as Linda
Tellington-Jones, Mimi Porter, Mary Ann Simonds, and others. With so
many great minds coming together for one meeting, I couldn't help but
be inspired. A strong foundation was laid to really propel me into a
more open view of health and a good vision for a "whole-listic"
approach to medicine.
In 2000, I began a relationship with Jim Helfter
(animal nutritionist), owner of Advanced Biological Concepts (ABC)
and Helfter Feeds in Osco, IL. Both holistically minded, we hit it off
well. I firmly believe in Advanced Biological Concepts products and
ideals. You will find many of their products on this website.
In 2001 and 2002, I worked with, consulted to,
and learned from Dino Frettard (International Equine Bodyworker) and
Rod Raymond, DAc (Equine Acupuncturist) at the H.I.T.S. hunter/jumper
horse competition at Indio, Ca. I also recieved my Reiki attunement
from Maggie O'Brien (Energy Worker), being her first student. This is
where the foundation for my current techinques for treating horses
comes from, now it is the way I do my day job, treating horses using
bodywork.
Schleese Saddlery and
Prestige are two saddle companies I represented and learned from since
1999 to 2003. Going from the East coast with Prestige to Canada with
Schleese I became a well rounded saddle fitter, especially when working
with Jochen Schleese (internationally known master saddler). Applying
my knowledge of horse biomechanics and chiropractics with Jochen's
saddle making mastery along with a few other presenters, we presented
at the Can-Am Trade Show in London, Ontario in 2002 in one of my first
whole approach for better movement in the horse presentations.
In the field of equine dentistry I could not have
fallen into a better place. I have had the pleasure of learning from
the two best equine dentists in the country (of course they all think
they're the best). In my own backyard is Lance Rubin, a certified
master equine dentist, instructor, and examiner, basically Lance
teaches and certifies equine dentists going through the International
Association of Equine Dentistry Certification. Most of what I know
about equine dentistry I learned from Lance. The other part of what I
know comes from Spencer Lefleur, aka The Tooth Fairy. Spencer has a
unique perspective on dentistry and inspires that in not only those he
teaches but all of his clients as well. He loves to teach and being
around him its contagious to just want to look in a horse's mouth to
see what he sees. From these two equine dentists, I have gained
tremendous amounts of knowledge about the horse's mouth. I can't put
dates on this because I don't remember when I met Lance it has been
that long ago.
Considering the holistic viewpoint of the athletic
horse, in order to have ideal performance one needs to look at the
following – nutrition, farriery, dentistry, tack fit, rider
balance, and the horse’s body mechanics. I have made this my
entire practice area giving up traditional practice and working
exclusively on these six points to increase performance and efficiency
in my clients’ performance horses.
Small
Animals
The majority of my expertise is in horses,
however, for the past 5 years I have worked in, and still do, several
small animal clinics as a holistic consultant and animal chiropractor.
Working with several different clinics has given me a wide assortment
of perspectives on a wide variety of cases. I have always had an
interest in looking at things from a holistic approach, even when my
career during vet school was heading towards a farm animal emphasis I
was looking in management practices as the way to treat an entire herd
of animals, a very wholistic way of examination. Now I look at dogs and
cats in a more wholistic way because it makes more sense.
My philosophy on medicine is based on my
definition of wholistic or the more traditonally accepted spelling
holistic as "all inclusive". What this means is that I not only
recommend natural treatments, but I will also recommend traditional or
conventional treatments. Many times I feel that the best treatment is
the more traditional way. One example would be treatment for a
pyometra, which is a major life threatening infection of the uterus. In
a dog my recommendation is to have the dog (bitch for those who wish to
be grammatically correct) spayed - a surgery to remove the entire
uterus. I then would recommend physical therapy and more alternative
treatments for the recovery of the dog. I feel that a holistic approach
is to use the best tools available and in this case a dog's life is
more important than its future reproductive status and the best
treatment would be to remove the site of the infection. I have devoted
this site to this philosophy.
Personal
I live in Crown Point, a
suburb of Chicago in NW Indiana with my wife and 3 kids. My hobbies
include paintball and martial arts. I strive for excellence and have a
great interest in self improvement of mind, body and spirit which you
will also see emphasized in this website. I also like to develop
websites of my interests which includes this one and www.healingkinetics.com.
Thanks for reading and come back soon!
